Awareness on and Compliance with the Food Act in Sri Lanka: An Analysis of the Present Status 

Purpose: In Sri Lanka, legislative regulation of food safety and hygiene issues is mainly done under the Food Act No. 26 1980. Proper awareness compliance to are necessary for safety. This cross-sectional analysis was assess present status with prohibitions regulations by stakeholders.Research Method: Litigations Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) from 7 districts data a field survey 30 PHIs (from same districts), 50 traders 70 consumers 5 districts) were collected. Findings: According litigations analyzed, “Food (labeling advertising) regulation” highest violated in Lanka (p<0.05). However, (Packaging materials articles) had significantly higher ranking (p<0.05) according PHIs’ survey. traders’ ranking, their least on “Packaging articles” “Bread standards” respectively. Consumers’ “Coloring agents” “Flavoring respectively compliances “Adoption “Labeling advertising” Originality/Value: study gives an overall idea about current stakeholders Act. It vital future policy development.
